Introduction
This section, complete with
many fine pictures, will give you a preview of what it means to travel
with us. The places described here, made famous in myth and fable, go back
to the roots of Western Civilization, and their importance cannot be overstated.
The past and present are united in these countries, and visiting them will
help us to understand our culture and ourselves. All the events and ideas
of ancient civilization, which, resounding down the centuries, have shaped
our own culture, will come alive with startling immediacy and power.
Background
information
The ancient Greeks thought
travel was the best education. So do we. Globe Tours provides carefully
planned and well thought out itineraries to give you much more than a typical
trip to popular tourist spots. Our itineraries offer an in-depth cultural
experience combined with vacation fun.
Dr. McElwee, who personally
leads many of our tours, has selected experienced English-speaking native
guides who will introduce you to the folklore, traditions, art and history
of their culture. He has also picked hotels on the basis of their charm
and location, and restaurants that offer the authentic cuisines only available
in the less frequented native establishments.
We take great pride in offering
small group tours with an educational approach, yet with a casual ambience;
our emphasis is on culture, with plenty of opportunity for good times.
While the costs of our tours
vary with destination, time of year, and currency fluctuations, Globe Tours
are always competitively priced and offer excellent value. We also offer
you an opportunity to travel free.
Broaden your horizons. Take
the road less traveled by. Taste the food of distant lands. Walk by the
seas made famous in myth. Hear the voices of other peoples. Experience
worlds unlike your own. If you wish to be more than a tourist, and seek
instead the perspective which foreign travel offers, e-mail us.
Globe
Tours logo
In ancient times Greeks
inhabited the coast of Asia Minor, an area known as Ionia. Ionia was the
birthplace of Greek literature, science, philosophy, architecture, city
planning, and culture generally. Our logo is an Ionic column, taken from
a woodcut of a column on the Erechtheion at Athens. The column symbolizes
the learning, grace, and culture of ancient Greece.
Globe
Tours motto
The Greek inscription says,
"Foreign travel is the best education." This was a sentiment well known
by Greeks from Homer on. Odysseus, that clever and resourceful hero, was
a "man of many turns," in large part because "he had seen the cities of
many men, and knew their minds." Our director also believes that seeing
new people, places, and things is the best education. He wrote the inscription.

Cultural
discussions
Our cultural discussions
are informal chats between members of the group and our leader. They are
not pedantic lectures, and you are free to participate or not. These discussions
are designed to awaken your mind to those universal principles of the human
spirit expressed in the art, literature and myth of the cultures we visit.
Reading lists are available upon request. Topics are listed under the description
of each tour in our hard-copy brochure.
About
the director
A
professor of classics, ancient history, and law, a cliff-diver and swimmer
(he swam the Hellespont in 1995), Larry McElwee has been traveling the
world and leading tours since 1980. He is as familiar with shop keepers
and cafe owners as he is with the history and traditions of his destinations.
Larry's enthusiasm for local culture, native cuisine, and out-of-the-way
spots will make your travel experience both
an educational adventure and a fun-filled vacation.
Letters
from our travellers:
Lisa Reuter, Travel
Editor, The Columbus Dispatch
This prof is at the head
of his class in Europe, Middle East tours. I've bumped into some of his
repeat clients, and they always offer rave reviews - praising his hotel
and restaurant selections, his tour pace and his easy manner of slipping
into the history and literature associated with the places. His clients
feel like travelers instead of tourists.
Jean D. Hansford,
Senior Campus Planner, Ohio State University
"Interesting Places! Great
accommodations! A real variety of experiences! Wonderful food and libations!
Bright and personable travel companions! The opportunity to meet and know
the people of Greece! These are the reasons I keep coming back to Globe."
Norma Murphy, Beaumont, Texas
"If one is interested in
becoming a "traveler" instead of a "tourist," I recommend he sign up for
a tour with Globe Tours and have an unforgettable time! The director plans
each tour with such care that the traveler is educated and captivated at
the same time. An added bonus is the reasonable cost."
Prof. Robert Wade, Capital
University Law School
"It was a pleasure to work
with you to set up our successful alumni trip to Greece. The hotels you
selected were excellent, the food was out of this world, and your commentary
about the history and significance of the Greek legal system was outstanding."
Jack Farady, V.P., John Hancock
Insurance, Boston
"Thank you for arranging
the exceptional trip to Egypt which our family took in March. The accommodations
were excellent and the variety of activities over a two week period was
truly remarkable."
Evelyn and Bob Mauck, Columbus
"We want to thank you for
planning such a wonderful trip for our group of fourteen...Our three weeks
in Greece and Turkey have been described by several couples as 'the best
trip we ever took.'
The guides you chose for
us were outstanding, and hotels were all first class, well located, and
not too big -- in short, we would go back to any of them on a return trip.
The pace of the tour was
beautifully thought out. We saw all the important sites and antiquities,
yet had time to enjoy the sun, sea, and slow pace of the islands."
W. Thacher Longstreth, City
Councilman, Philadelphia
"I've traveled extensively
all over the world during and since World II, and never have I had more
sheer fun, with lots of knowledge gained, than I did on your Globe Tour
to Turkey."
Steve Betras, M.D., Columbus
"Your attention to detail
and obvious familiarity with the logistics of travel, accommodations and
above all the restaurants and their owners made this trip virtually free
of stress or worry... You are obviously an American with the soul of the
Greeks."
Su Kraegel, Kansas City
"If I used all the superlatives
which come to mind when I think of our trip to Greece with you this summer,
I would sound like a travel brochure... The best vacation we have ever
had."
Dr. Maxene Doty, University
of Maine
"Egypt, vast, exquisite,
jasmine-scented, was enchanting. The trip was filled with magic, which,
I know, reflected your knowledge and all the preparation that made everything
go so smoothly and seem so effortless. ... Even as I write, I am beginning
to pack for the next trip, back to Greece."
Lillian Messick, Philadelphia
Museum of Art
"As we watch our videos
and page through our photo album, we are stricken with a nearly overwhelming
desire to hop the next flight to Istanbul. Turkey was all that you promised
and more: a land dense with history and exquisite art, brimming with vistas
of breathtaking beauty, and inhabited by the most extraordinarily kind
people I have met anywhere."
Prof. Ralph Hunter, Hunter College,
New York
"We shall always cherish
the memory of all we saw and experienced on your Globe Tour of Greece.
The group was just the right size and most congenial, and your knowledge
of the logistics of travel as well as your familiarity with the places
and people made for smooth sailing all the way."
The Rev. Jane P. Mykrantz,
Columbus
"The trip was a special
study for me to visit very early Christian and Byzantine church sites in
mainland Greece as well as the traditional classic sites in Delphi, Olympia
and Crete. I recommend Larry McElwee as guide/planner/organizer for your
next trip abroad."
Martin Winkler, Bucknell
University
"Your reasonable price played
no small part in my ability to get students interested in the trip in the
first place."
William Gillam, President,
McElroy-Minister, Columbus
"Thank you for the personal
touches that made the Classical Greek tour so enjoyable. In addition to
your historical insights, your familiarity with the local neighborhoods,
restaurants and shopkeepers made the experience a fun-filled vacation."
Dr. Glenn Philipps, Fountain
Valley School, Colorado Springs
"And the tour itself --
the very comfortable bus and friendly driver, the exceptionally knowledgeable
guide, and the itinerary to the archaeological sites -- was all that I
had hoped. And finally, the day that you spent with us in Athens was a
great delight. Your contacts opened doors that I never knew were there."
